The Festival of Beltane

By: Jane Houston

Beltane is the last of the three ancient Celtic fertility festivals. It is now celebrated on May 1st as May Day but the pre-calendar Celts marked it more roughly as somewhere between the spring equinox and midsummer equinox. It marked the arrival of summer and the growing season.

The word Beltane comes from the Gaelic for sacred fire or fire of Bel where Bel was the god of the sun. One of the more important parts of the Beltane festival was the lighting of the fires. All other fires in the area were extinguished the night before only to be lit anew the next day from the embers of the festival bonfire.
Most of the rituals associated with Beltane relate to fertility and the earth. Perhaps that explains why the church outlawed it in the 1700s. As happened with many of the pagan festivals, the church took on some of the rites and traditions to attract pagan followers. That is why people are still familiar with maypoles and the May Queen.

The Beltane Fire Society is a volunteer group who organise a fantastical May Queen procession starting on top of the Acropolis on Calton Hill in Edinburgh, Scotland. The queen is accompanied by the winter aspect of the Green Man, known as the horned god. The event has attracted up to 15,000 spectators with over 300 collaborators and performers are involved in the display.
